The best ways to find your ideal Scottish holiday cottage on the internet
Q  How should I search?
A  Google “self catering” and your chosen location. Widen the area or narrow it as you search
Q.  Should I find a self catering property owner directly from the web or search through a  Scottish directory?
A. There are 2 kinds of directory - an agency which takes the bookings and allows no direct contact with the owners and a directory  which quotes e-mail and web addresses. The advantage of directories is that you’ll see many Scottish properties but agencies will stop you from contacting owners, and that is not good. Even VisitScotland the trading name of the Scottish Tourist Office make it difficult on their web site to find owners. They also take a commission on the bookings,  they’ll lose it if you contact the owner. That’s the problem with agencies, they charge you more than the owner will and they will not have the full information on the property, they  don’t know how near is the pub, whether the garden is safe for children and so on. Most people prefer contact with the owner for good reason. There are many top properties in the Highlands of Scotland, or the West Coast. We are not members of the Scottish Tourist Board ourselves.
Q   I can’t find owners’ sites in Scotland when I search
A  There are two methods you can use 1) Go straight to page 3 or more of  the search engine results to clear the Directory sites. You’ll find them then.  2) Otherwise go to Dmoz, the world’s largest hand edited Directory. Navigate to Recreation, Travel, Lodging,  Europe,  United Kingdom, Scotland, pick the Region you want, goto Self catering and you’ll find owners’ sites.  You can also find top owners’ web sites below  on this page. These are all very good holiday properties indeed spread all around Scotland.
Q. I want to find a  self-catering property in Scotland at the last minute, how should I search?
A. Some directories offer late bookings.  The problem is that owners do not keep their availabilities up to date. This is a sister site of  ours last minute holiday breaks in Scotland
