HISTORY AROUND GLENCOE SCOTLAND

The history of Glencoe starts with the Massacre. The true story of what happened is here and it may surprise you. But the history of Glencoe, Scotland is much much older than that.

There is so much of truly ancient Scottish history around us. This Megalithic standing stone is just fifteen minutes away from Kentallen. The Archara stone is 3 minutes away in Duror. It is the largest in Argyll and just 3,000 years old that’s all. Megalithic era.

Glencoe folk museum In the main street this is a lovely little museum. Good for a rainy afternoon. Local material galore. Ft. William’s West Highland Museum, too, is excellent.
Castle Stalker nearby was first  built on the rock in the 13th century. It is more or less unchanged since then,  it looks brilliant from the hill above it. Or visit Duart Castle, Dunstaffnage Castle or Castle Tioram, or Eilean Donan, Castle Urquart, and we could go on and on. All within reach.

Iona Abbey. If you are into romance you must go. Scottish Kings are buried here, the place has a wonderful atmosphere. The Abbey was founded by St. Columba and Christianity spread throughout Scotland from here. He sorted out the fighting between Scots and the Picts once and for all
