The Gulf Stream started flowing 10,000 years ago and brought us out of our last Ice Age. It starts off around Mexico as a narrow stream with a surface current flowing at nearly 6 miles per hour, 300 times faster than the Amazon. Off Scotland it gets broader and the the flow is down to 1 mile per hour. Then the water sinks as it gets colder and saltier and reverses underneath to go back to Mexico.

This is what enables us all to live here. Simple as that. It is much warmer in the West of the area than it is inland. It gets much wetter when the rain clouds hit the mountains.

Parts of the Highlands have an average of 36" to 105" snow days per year, while coastal areas have between 0 and 6 days of snow a year. The coast road is nearly always clear of Snow and Ice.

It gets colder by 2 c degrees for every 1,000 feet you climb. The top of Ben Nevis is 8 c degrees colder than sea level. The annual average air temperature there is –0.3c degrees.

The coldest months are January and February, once the snow falls then it stays widely on the tops until April. On Ben Nevis some snow lies in the gullies all year round. But the lowest temperatures  are inland at Rannoch Moor and not on the West Coast.

“Lovely stay, fantastic weather, snowy mountain peaks, great cottage, shame we have to leave. Thanks for giving us winter walkers somewhere to rest our weary limbs.” The Woodhams family 28 Feb.
