It is handy if there is a woman in the party. They survive more easily. In winter you need ice axe, crampons and goggles.

A GPS system is very useful for marking waypoints there and back, but you cannot rely on it without a map and compass as well. Remember that if there is a clash between the GPS position and what you read on the map, the GPS will be right. Trust us. The compass needs a magnifying lens, and scales for measuring distances on
