Rain was invented by the Scots as a brilliant idea to discourage people they don’t want, and it works. If it did not rain in Scotland the place is so absolutely gorgeous that it would be overrun by riff-raff

Here is how to deal with rain.

Don’t expect it not to rain.  Just enjoy it, go with the flow.  The key to this is wearing good shoes, preferably boots, and watertight anoraks with hoods.

Don’t expect the rain to stop.

When the sun shines, you can often get the feeling that it may not rain later. Lie down until the feeling passes.

Umbrellas are useless. The Scots invented high winds, too. Glencoe gets 10 feet of rain every year. 7 of them will be on the day you go there. Kentallen, our little hamlet gets less than half of this.

30mins Ft.William, visit lovely little museum, they’ve got the gun which was used in the Appin Murder and the old town birching bench. Children’s Indoor Play Centre next to Safeways in Ft. William. Visit Leisure Centre, big swimming pool. Go Bowling. Ben Nevis Distillery 01397 702476. Get a dram and a bowl of soup to the North of the town on the Inverness Road 1 mile from town.

40 mins Oban Distillery, right in the middle of town.

45mins to the start, but it is an all day job. Take a Mac Braynes steamer from Oban. Go anywhere, it is all brilliant. 01631 566688. Yes, even in the rain.

45 mins Go Bowling in Oban. Piazza on the North Pier. Watch the big ferries to the Hebrides come and go. Exotic interesting foods at the Kitchen Garden, High street

15 mins  Coffee in Crafts and Things Glencoe - and fiddle about in the gift shop. Glencoe museum. In the main village street, this is a lovely little thatched museum. Local material galore. When they re-thatched the roof a few years ago they found old guns hidden, last used at the Battle of Culloden.

15 mins Try the new Coffee shop above Stalker Castle.  Look at the view and contemplate nature. (Go on to mess about in Oban. Sit in Piazza coffee shop on North Pier and watch the boats.)  Visitors Centre exhibition in Glencoe on main road. Plenty of things for youngsters to do in the afternoons, wet or dry.

25mins South on Oban Road. If you are a little person then get the Big People to take you to the Sea Life Centre. Tell them they can get Coffee there.

Best outdoors idea. 25 mins Go find the waterfalls  Top of Glencoe by the road is usually spectacular and then go on to the River Etive down the single track Glen Etive, watch the canoeists on the falls. They are all nuts to do that. There are fine roadside falls just before you get to Kinlochleven, or try the walk behind Inchree. After 24 hours of rain, then watch rivers in spate – see it to believe it.

Best indoor idea 25 mins Go to the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven. Sit and watch, and later, join in. Brilliantly different, worth a couple of hours

5mins  Go to Cuil Bay (past the Duror shop, turn right). Sit in the car, and look South in wonder. 1,000 years ago the small island you see was home to a Columban monk who lived in a cell for years. So you think you’ve got problems.
