Where to eat around Glencoe
Three brilliant places, each different from each other, and well ahead of the rest
For the past 60 years, since the end of World War 11, the Clachaig has been at the
centre of peoples plans. "What shall we do to-
But during the day, there is a different kind of meeting place for tourists and for locals. Bright, breezy, beautifully done, a gem of a coffee shop. It is called Crafts and Things. The staff are so friendly, so good. You'll find the owner, David, in the cafe with the regulars. Believe it or not, they've had all the stars of Stage and Screen, Radio and Television in Crafts and Things. Yes, it is that famous, that good and that distinct.
Everyone in the know, goes to Crafts and Things by Glencoe village for coffee and lunch during the day.
There is one other gem of a place in the area. This one is totally different from the other two. It is a beautifully appointed hotel, with a dining room and the most spectacular views across Loch Linnhe into the evening sunsets. It is called the Holly Tree Hotel, in Kentallen, about 400 yards from our cottage. The food is marvellous, it is the place for a very special evening meal. Yes, you'll pay about £25 a head all in, but this I promise is very good value for money. In Edinburgh it would be more like £60 a head. And you can have a swim in the indoor swimming pool included if you care to ask them .
Glencoe is mountain country. Volcanic rock. That means a climbers paradise, an Eden for walkers, a Mecca for outdoor sports, snow, ice, everything. Yes, avalanches and mountain rescue too.
Wherever mountain people meet, anywhere in the world, someone will start talking about Glencoe. As often as not they'll agree to meet there the next time they are in Scotland. Where, exactly?
The Clachaig Inn. This place is the heart of Glencoe.

Of course there are many other places to eat. Some we avoid, some are ok but ordinary. Trouble is the chefs and the management change all the time. They are good one minute then something happens. We like the Airds Hotel in Port Appin, where Tony Blair had his honeymoon with Cherie, but the prices are fearsome.
