The Gulf Stream started flowing 10,000 years ago and brought us out of our last Ice
Age. It starts off around Mexico as a narrow stream with a surface current flowing
at nearly 6 miles per hour, 300 times faster than the Amazon. Off Scotland it gets
broader and the the flow is down to 1 mile per hour. Then the water sinks as it gets
colder and saltier and reverses underneath to go back to Mexico.
This is what enables us all to live here. Simple as that. It is much warmer in the
West of the area than it is inland. It gets much wetter when the rain clouds hit
May and June are recognised as the best months for weather combining sunshine, clear
skies and lack of rain. It is still quite crisp in May, but wonderful
Scotland is full of highly variable local climates.
We have one of them in Kentallen. Our little area is warmer, has more sunshine, less
frost, less snow than almost anywhere else in Scotland. The records show that every
month the temperature here is 15% higher than the average for Scotland. It has 18
days a year less frost. Sunshine in January is 33.5 hours, compared to Scotland’s
average of 30.8 hours. Even the rainfall is less.
“The landscape and surroundings of the house are marvellous. It was always sunny.
Ardnamurchan three times our favourite part of the West Highlands.”
Alex and Ariane June
“We’ve had a wonderful week, every type of weather. Wildlife watching on Mull, sea
eagles, golden eagles and otters being the highlights”
